FLL Department Chair Dr. Fraser Named Next Editor of Hispania

Dr. Benjamin Fraser has been selected as the 13th Editor of Hispania, the highly acclaimed research journal of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). Dr. Fraser’s extensive editorial experience includes a number of positions with peer-reviewed journals and a book series. He has served as Founding and Executive Editor of the Journal of Urban Cultural Studies, as Senior Editor, Managing Editor, and Assistant Editor of the Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies, as Assistant Editor of Studies in Latin American Popular Culture, and, with Susan Larson, as Founding Co-Editor of the Hispanic Urban Studies book series. A researcher specializing in contemporary culture, Dr. Fraser explores literature, film, visual art, popular culture, comics and urban space from an interdisciplinary perspective. He is the author of eighty articles and book chapters published across the fields of Hispanic Studies, Cultural Geography, and Disability Studies.

Dr. Papalas' publication receives feminist scholarship award

The Women’s Caucus for the Modern Languages selected "Fashion in Interwar France: The Urban Vision of Elsa Schiaparelli,” an article by Dr. Marylaura Papalas, Assistant Professor of French, as the winner of the 2017 Florence Howe Award for feminist scholarship in the field of foreign languages. The award, which comes with an honorarium, was announced at the annual Modern Languages Association meeting in New York the first week of January 2018.

Global LLC
Global Living-Learning Community

This fall 2017 marked the official beginning of East Carolina University’s Global Living-Learning Community, consisting of a tight-knit group of seven first-year students from diverse backgrounds who live in the same residence hall on campus. The students’ interests range from anthropology and classics, to biology, healthcare, Hispanic studies and Japanese culture. The Global LLC is a joint effort between the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and ECU’s Division of Campus Living. Global LLC students take classes and workshops together, as well as participate in activities and events that highlight diverse cultural practices, worldviews and linguistic diversity.
