First-Year Seminar (COAD 1000)

The objective of COAD 1000 is to assist new students in being successful in their first year of college and beyond. Topics covered in this course include understanding the transition from high school to college, student development and motivation, goal-setting, learning styles, memory development, listening skills, note-taking skills, study skills, test-taking skills, communication, critical-thinking skills, ECU academic rules and regulations, and career development issues.

COAD 1000 is taught by academic advisors and student affairs educators trained in understanding college student development and the academic and social issues encountered by college students.
New students who would like to add COAD 1000 to their schedule may do so by contacting their academic advisor.

The First-Year Seminar helps students:

  • Improve motivation and goal setting skills.
  • Understand personal learning style and how to adapt study skills to that learning style.
  • Take effective notes and prepare for and take tests successfully.
  • Understand their personality profile and how it fits to their major/career choice.
  • Develop a personal philosophy of career development.
  • Locate and utilize a variety of services and resource materials at ECU.
  • Be knowledgeable about student opportunities and extra-curricular activities.
  • Understand ECU academic rules and regulations and advising/registration procedures.
  • Make connections with other peers and a professional staff member.

In addition to general COAD 1000 sections, sections are offered based on major as well as several special interest groups such as transfer students, veterans/dependents, LGBT students, first-generation students, and international students.
