Academically Gifted Add-On Licensure

As with all AIG licenses in the state of North Carolina, the program entails completing four courses. At ECU, our courses run in a four course sequence which begins in the summer and concludes the following summer. Therefore the next opportunity to become involved in coursework at ECU will be in June of this year.

All of the courses required by the AIG Licensure Program at ECU are taught online, with the exception of two face-to-face weeks (one the first summer and one the second summer) involving a camp for gifted children.

Program Details

The four courses are offered in the sequence listed below. Unfortunately they are not offered more frequently than in the sequence listed below.

SPED 6104: Introduction to Gifted Education (online with 1 week face-to-face): An introduction to the education of gifted students emphasizing definitions, characteristics, theories of intelligence, and methods of identification. (Beginning second summer session online with one week face-to-face at a camp for gifted kids in Greenville NC. (each Summer 2, ONLINE except for required face-to-face camp in Greenville — usually held in July, exact dates will be provided)

SPED 6401: Methods & Materials in Gifted Education (online): An in-depth investigation of the materials, programs, and theories of educating the gifted. (each Fall semester, all online)

SPED 6402: Differentiated Curriculum for the Gifted (online): An in-depth study of student and program assessment and the development of differentiated curricula for gifted students. (each Spring semester, all online)

SPED 6403: Practicum in Gifted Education (online with 1 week face-to-face): Actual classroom experience with gifted children. Students will be responsible for planning and implementing instructional programs. (Beginning second summer session online with one week face-to-face. (each Summer 2, ONLINE except for required face-to-face camp in Greenville — usually held in July, exact dates will be provided)

Once you have decided that this program is right for you, you can provide us with your information by filling out an online form. Filling out this form will allow us to send you further information about the cohort including enrollment deadlines, registration deadlines, etc. but filling out the form does not mean that you will be required to join the cohort.

If you have not already done so and would like to indicate your INTENT to be part of the next cohort, simply do the following:·     

Once we have received your completed AIG (Academically Intellectually Gifted) Intent Form, you will be ready for the next step in the process.

First, you will need to decide whether you want to be a degree-seeking graduate student or a non-degree-seeking student. If you are interested ONLY in getting your Add-On AIG licensure, you would apply as a non-degree seeking student. If, however, you are interested in obtaining your master's degree and an Add-On AIG licensure, you will apply as a degree-seeking student. Please read below about how to apply for the Add-On AIG licensure as a non-degree or degree seeking student. 

Be certain to read the set of directions that fits your intent. Note that you should complete this step as soon as possible in order to be considered for the next cohort. Though the next cohort does not begin until June, registration for the courses begin in March and spots are filled on a first come, first served basis for those who have completed their ECU application. Directions for Applying as a Non-Degree Seeking Student(Add-On AIG Licensure)

  1. Begin by visiting ECU's Graduate School's website. Be sure to click on the "step by step guide to admissions" and read about non-degree students.
  2. Scroll down to To Apply. Create an admission ID. Continue to follow the stated instructions once you've begun your own application. You can save the application and go back to it at any time. Remember to pay your $70.00 application fee.
  3. You will be asked which Admission Term you would like to begin in. For this question, you must mark 2nd Summer Session 2013.  The AIG course sequence begins in the second summer session each year.
  4. Next, you will be asked if you are seeking a license. You are not seeking an undergraduate license. You are seeking an Academically Intellectually Gifted license. For the drop-down box, choose Academically Intellectually Gifted.
  5. If you have questions about any portion of the actual application, you may contact the Graduate School at (252) 328-6012.
  6. After you submit the non-degree application online, you will need to request official transcripts from every college or university where you completed seven or more hours. Photocopies may not be submitted. These official transcripts should be mailed directly to the Graduate School at 131 Ragsdale Building, Greenville, NC 27858.
  7. After you apply, if you have any questions about the status of your application you may contact the Graduate Office at (252)328-6012. Finally, AFTER you have been admitted as a non-degree student, please email Dr. Novak with your Banner ID number (a number that begins B00XXXXXX) and your ECU email address for course registration purposes.

Directions for Applying as a Non-Degree Seeking Student (Add-On AIG Licensure):

  1. Begin by visiting the ECU Graduate School website.Click “Apply” under the “Connect” heading on the right-hand side of the site.
  2. Select the “Non-Degree” option then select Academically Gifted, Non-Degree. Choose which term you want to apply to.
  3. Create your account on the right-hand side. Once you create your account you will receive an automated email to verify your account. After your account is verified you should be able to log in. If you have trouble receiving the verification email please contact the Graduate School at gradschool@ecu.edu.
  4. Once you are logged in with your credentials your application will automatically start. Continue through the application until you have finished and click submit.You can save the application and go back to it at any time.
  5. If you have questions about any portion of the actual application, you may contact the Graduate School at (252) 328-6012 or gradschool@ecu.edu.
  6. After you submit your application online, you will need to pay your $75.00 application fee. You can find this link in the email confirmation after you submit your application. Please request official transcripts from every college or university where you completed seven or more hours. Photocopies may not be submitted. These official transcripts should be mailed directly to the Graduate School at 131 Ragsdale Building, Greenville, NC 27858.
  7. After you apply, if you have any questions about the status of your application you may login to your Self-Service Account.
  8. Note: Any student who does not take classes during a regular semester (fall/spring) must reapply to the Graduate school in order to reactivate his/her status as a graduate student and access to his/her ECU email account.
